What Does Working for Yourself Look Like

What Does Working for Yourself Look Like pexels.com Flexibility When you work for yourself, you get to set the rules. Whatever you did not like about working for someone else, you no longer have to do. And whatever you did like about working for someone else, you can. Hate crunching numbers? You no longer have to do it. Hate doing paperwork? It is not something you must do. You have the flexibility to choose the tasks you are interested in doing and take those on for yourself. Tasks like crunching numbers and doing paperwork probably still need to be done in every business, but when you are in charge of your own little company, you are no longer forced to do tasks that you find unpleasant. You can hire an assistant or outsource tasks that you abhor so that you have the time to focus on the part of the business that you like best. Of course you could be creative and find a way around those tasks you hate or find a way that you can make them more bearable to do as well. And you could always not do them but to keep working for yourself, you need to be successful so you probably should not just flat out ignore activities that you dislike for that reason only. You could though, if you wanted to. It is one of the perks of working for yourself and having the flexibility to pick and choose what you do. Another aspect of flexibility that you will get to enjoy is choose when to work. Does the idea of a 9 to 5 work day make your insides shrivel? You do not have to! If you are a night owl, then work at night. If you are a morning person, work during the morning. Need to have your Wednesdays free? You can work on Saturdays instead and make your own weekends. Want to see your little brother’s school play? You can do that. Want to take the day off on your birthday? You can! You get to work when you want to and no one will reprimand you for taking a day off. You still need to be responsible about how you run your business though so that you can be successful. pexels.com Responsibility In order for your independently run business to be successful, you must be responsible. Working for yourself means just that â€" you are in charge and it is up to you, and only you, if you are successful. Especially when you first start out working for yourself, you have no money to hire employees. You are starting from the ground up which means you are responsible for every single aspect. You have to do the accounting, the marketing, the selling, the designing, the everything! Setting up a new business and establishing it takes a lot of hard work and you need to be able to rise to the occasion and meet the challenge. You have to take the initiative and follow every lead. You need to work whatever hours necessary in order to make your business flourish. This might mean working hours and days you might prefer not to or even working more than you did before for even less money. But if having the environment to choose what you do and what you pursue is the right one for it, the hard work to establish yourself as a company will make all the hard work you do in the beginning worth it. When everything is up and running smoothly, the work you do will not feel as much like work. You will be in a happy and healthy environment doing exactly what it is that you love to do. Your success hinges on how seriously you take your responsibilities â€" to the new company, to your new clients, to your new employees, to your family, and most importantly, to yourself.

The best programs to teach English in Japan (not just the JET program! )

The best programs to teach English in Japan (not just the JET program! ) Japan is of the most popular destinations for teach abroad programs and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out why. The West has been obsessing over Japanese culture since time immemorial. From robots to anime to pokémon to geishas to Shinto shrines to Final Fantasy to Studio freakin’ Ghibli to…okay, you get the idea. Ever heard of a weeaboo? Well, it means someone who has taken their love of Japanese culture a little too far (it’s intended to be derogatory, but it sounds too cute to feel that way). Anyway, the fact is: we ?? Japan! And as a result, lots of English speakers flock there to teach English. Despite the prevalence of weeaboos amongst us (), few teachers seem to know that much about English teaching programs in Japan. Psst, need a primer on all things related to teaching in Japan? Look no further than the following blog posts: How to land an English teaching job in Japan Teaching English in Japan: What are the requirements? How much money can you make teaching in Japan? Your guide to teaching English in Japan for the summer? Can I get a job teaching in Japan if I don’t have a college degree The top 8 English teaching programs in Japan Google is full of page after page extolling the virtues of the JET program, so much so, that you’d be forgiven for assuming it’s one of the only ways to land a job as an English teacher in Japan. Which is simply not the case, there are plenty of different programs bringing native English speakers to Japan. We’re going to talk about the best programs out there, so that you can broaden your options and finally get to embrace Japanese culture up close and personal. FromJapan’s public schools and private schools to business English schools, the opportunities are endless. So let’s get cracking… 1. The JET program Perfect for: Graduates across all majors, new teaching graduates Okay, so this couldn’t be a blog about teaching abroad programs in Japan without including JET. Thing is, it’s not your only option, so remember that and don’t despair if you don’t get in. There are other programs (which we’ve taken the liberty of listing our faves below) and this is not the only way to kickstart your English teaching adventure in Japan. The JET program stands for the Japan Exchange and Teaching program. They hire English speaking graduates from all over the world to live and teach in Japan. It’s a mix of private and public schools and as far as salary goes, it’s one of your better options. Positions include competitive salaries, benefits, housing allocations and the magical flight reimbursement. If you work with ALT, you are an Assistant Language Teacher which means you have help in the classroom (a benefit for new teachers who might be nervous of facing a class for the first time). Positions are available across Japan and the finer details of your contract will depend on what school you end up in. JET program requirements Bachelor’s degree TEFL certification considered a strong asset Interest in Japanese culture (you will be considered a cultural ambassador) Be both mentally physically healthy Interested? Check out this first-hand account from a recent JET program participant! 2. Interac Perfect for: Graduates across all majors, new teaching graduates who want to teach in rural Japan Interac is one of the biggest programs recruiting ESL teachers for Japan. They hire all year round but tend to place teachers in the Spring and Fall. Spring is their biggest season, so that might be the best time to send over your resume. This is also an ALT (Assistant Language Program) position, so there’s a safety net in the classroom for the nervous amongst you. One thing to note is that a lot of the positions are in rural areas and they do recommend that candidates are able to drive. They tend to prefer applicants open to a quieter existence and willing to drive. The positions in cities are crazy competitive and tend to be easier to transfer into once you’ve already taught in Japan for a year or two. A teacher set on working in a Japanese city, might do a year working with Interac Japan in the countryside to pave the way for their metropolitan dream! Interac Japan requirements Native-level speaker of English Educated through English for at least 12 years Bachelor’s degree 3. Westgate Perfect for: Experienced ESL teachers with a bachelor’s degree If you’re interested in teaching English at the university level in Japan, then the Westgate program is for you. Universities come out on top in terms of benefits and salary so you can expect an impressive salary if you land one of these coveted positions. On top of that, teachers can expect to receive a fully-developed curriculum. This is in stark comparison to some university programs in other countries where you might get thrown in at the deep end with little or (*shudder*) no guidance. Westgate offers 3 - 5 month contracts to prospective teachers so you can get a taster before committing to Japan for the long-haul. In addition to all this, you don’t even need a master’s degree to apply. Usually, all they’re looking for is an undergrad with an ESL certification and some solid teaching experience (1000 hours of ESL classroom teaching). Westgate also hires elementary school English teachers with contracts for this program lasting 4 - 7 months. They require a university degree, ESL certificate and at least 1,000 hours of teaching experience with young learners. Westgate requirements Bachelor’s degree ESL certificate 1,000 hours ESL teaching experience (for elementary positions, experience must be with young learners) 4. JIEC Program Perfect for: ESL teachers with a degree and 2 years of experience JIEC Japan generally hires ESL teachers for Japanese kindergartens, but positions do exist at other levels. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on job postings on their site as they hire all year round. They look for ESL teachers with the minimum of a degree and two years’ experience (specifically teaching ESL). In terms of JIEC benefits, accommodation is covered and a settlement bonus is usually included, as well as a competitive salary. Their kindergartens are usually private and so hours can vary including both weekends and weekday evenings. JIEC Japan requirements 2 years’ ESL teaching experience Bachelor’s degree Sign up to Teach Away today for access to the latest teaching jobs around the world. 5. NOVA Japan Perfect for: Native English speakers with no experience NOVA Japan is a private English school that offers all sorts of opportunities for ESL teachers in Japan because they are considered a one-stop shop for English learning. From one-to-one conversation classes with business professionals to more traditional classroom-based learning. There are over 250 branches so you could end up teaching anywhere. One of the advantages of this program is that all the teachers in the school are native English speakers so you will have a ready-made expat community in place. The benefits are awesome with teachers having their accommodation sorted, flights reimbursed and a guaranteed number of lessons in their contract. Other perks of the job include Japanese lessons with a native Japanese Speaker (at a discounted rate) so those of you hoping to speak the local lingo will be taken care of! Nova Japan requirements No teaching experience required Native English speaker Bachelor’s degree 6. Gaba Perfect for: TEFL certified graduates across all majors If you’re an English teacher who wants to focus on 1-to-1 language lessons, Gaba (an eikaiwa, or English conversation, chain of schools) is your best bet. Specializing in adult learners, Gaba gives you the chance to be really creative. No two lessons will be the same as the focus is on a custom learning experience for all students. Gaba has their own methodology and training is provided. This program is flexible, allowing teachers to choose their own schedules and control their income. Monthly earnings will vary, but the going rate is 1500 yen per 40-minute lesson with bonuses in place for high performing teachers. The one thing to note is that teachers are treated as independent contractors so will be responsible for their own flights/accommodation etc. This is definitely for those teachers that enjoy their freedom and aren’t fazed by the idea of setting themselves up in Japan. Gaba requirements Fluent English Bachelor’s degree ESL qualification Experience in a corporate environment 7. Horizon International School Perfect for: Experienced, licensed teachers Ever dreamed of teaching at a top international school in Japan? A webcam class can be prepared in the same way as a face-to-face tutorial. You’ll have the same relationship with your students, talk to them in the same way, and be expected to tailor your classes to them in terms of their strengths and weaknesses.Don't forget that you can also teach your students live via webcam. (Source: PublicDomainPictures)There are several advantages to giving classes via webcam:No need to go anywhere: You can save a lot of time, petrol, and money! You can do them in your workshop or anywhere you like.More potential customers: If you can’t travel, you can get customers from all over the country (and the world!). If your students are a way on their holidays, as long as they have an internet connection, you can still teach themBetter availability: When you don’t have to travel, you’ll have more free time and therefore more times throughout the day when you can teach your lessons.Using online tools at the same time: If your student needs an explanation, you can find resources online during your lessons or by creating them yourself and sending them to your student in real-time via email or over Skype.Brief and precise exchanges: Generally, when you teach over a webcam, you can focus on what you need to say rather than having a chat. You’ll only talk about the task at hand.Fewer expenses: In fact, the student will need to have their own materials (thread, pins, patterns, etc.). It means you can save a lot of money!Of course, there are also disadvantages to teaching via webcam. You need to have a good internet connection so that you won’t have any lagging or communication issues with your student. If your video starts skipping, your student runs the risk of not understanding what you’re saying and, as a result, the quality of your teaching will be affected.Test your internet connection and your equipment before you start teaching online sewing classes. Make sure you’re in a well-lit room and invest in a decent microphone or headset. The fact that you’re not face-to-face can make establishing a bond difficult. You need to make sure that you convey a friendly disposition and build a relationship with your sewing students. A webcam class naturally puts distance between the teacher and the student and you have to work even harder to get your passion for sewing across.Don’t hesitate to sign up on Superprof: On our platform, you can offer tutorials via webcam. You can also offer face-to-face tutorials. The Advantages of Teaching Webcam Tutorials over Video CoursesWebcam tutorials allow you to have a genuine exchange with your student. It’s easier to tailor your classes to your students, who will probably have their own personal goals.Keep in mind that your student mightn't have all the sewing supplies that you have! (Source: PublicDomainPictures)A video course needs to cover a more general topic while webcam classes can focus on modifying clothes, handmade clothes, and customising your wardrobe.Additionally, you won’t need to invest in the most expensive equipment available when giving classes over webcam. Video courses require a decent tripod, good lighting, and quality sound equipment. Furthermore, you need to edit the videos afterwards which requires yet more skills.A webcam class just requires a webcam and a decent microphone so you can clearly communicate with your students. You can also offer your first hour of tutoring for free while you establish your teaching approach. An online sewing workshop can also save a lot of time as you won’t have to travel anywhere. You won’t save that much time when you make a video series as you’ll have to film and edit your videos.I’d strongly recommend webcam tutorials over pre-recorded videos as they’re much closer to actual tutorials and you’ll save more time and money than you would by making your own video courses.Online Sewing Classes TerminologyOnline sewing classes come with a lot of benefits for both you and your students. Online teaching jobs in general are very beneficial! However, you’ll need to familiarise yourself with a few key terms, no matter what you teach. Here are a couple of sewing terms, for example:What Is Jersey?Jersey is a fine knitted mesh used for making clothes. Originally jersey was made from cotton but now it can be made from synthetic fibres, too. Check the grammage as an indication of the quality. What Is a Pattern?A pattern is a template for clothing which explains the measurements and allowances. You can create clothing using a pattern to help you.See more about teaching sewing in schools.

New Years Resolution #1: Join new activities Staying active, meeting new people, and discovering new things about yourself are just a few of the perks of joining extracurricular activities. Remember, however, that what speaks to one person may not necessarily be what speaks to you, so choose activities based on your own interests and goals, not just what your best friend is doing. The best way to stick with this resolution is to identify the hobbies and skills you enjoy, and then find activities that foster them. Here are a few examples: Enjoy soccer? Consider joining an intramural league. Love playing music? Join your schools band or orchestra. Interested in cooking? Theres likely a culinary arts group or elective cooking class you could check out. Challenge yourself to join at least one new activity and really commit to ityou might be surprised at how much it can change your life! New Years Resolution #2: Get organized Being organized is an essential part of success in school (and life, in general). If you have not been the best with this in past years, 2017 is a great time to set some new standards for yourself. Think about what organization means to you and specifically which habits would help you become a more organized student. Do you want to keep better track of your commitments? Is physically organizing your spaces like your dorm room or desk very important? Or perhaps you would just like to start working toward a future goal and it requires some much needed planning to get there. Consider what is important to organize and work from there. It'll feel great to get everything in order so you can be successful in the coming year. New Years Resolution #3: Eat healthier This may not be the most fun resolution on your list, but eating healthy is a goal that will simply make you feel better overall. Getting the proper amounts of nutrition can improve your brain functionality, helping you to focus better on studying, achieve better grades on tests, and so on. The adjustment of eating healthier can encompass quite a number of changes, so focus on one aspect at a time. Even just swapping out your after-school snack with some fruits or veggies is an easy way to implement healthy eating into your daily routine. New Years Resolution #4: Improve your grades The key with improving grades is to be realistic and set goals over a logical timeframe. It could be nearly impossible to jump from a 2.5 to a 3.9 GPA in just one semester, for instance. However, setting reachable benchmarks throughout the year to work toward better grades can be highly beneficial. Maybe your GPA isnt a concern to you right now, but you simply wish to improve your grade in a specific class. Perhaps you have struggled in your Spanish class the last few semestersyou could set a resolution for 2017 to improve your grade in that class by one letter. Putting in extra time during homework sessions, planning your study sessions ahead of time, and improving your note-taking skills are all strategies that could help you achieve better grades. Moreover, dont forget about SAT and ACT scores! If you plan to take one of those exams this year, why not take actionable steps, like downloading free test prep books or mobile apps, to reach a target score? Area for Improvement Goal Example GPA Move from a 3.2 to a 3.5 ACT score Increase from a 24 to a 27 Class grade Raise from a B- to an A- Remember that New Years resolutions should be feasible, but also ones that push you to be the best version of yourself. Think hard about what you want to achieve in your future, and set resolutions now to help you be successful. Happy New Year! Any topics you want to know more about? Let us know!
